The software is also Rock solid. But the enterprise of America and other places lives by MS Office. To get to Microsoft you either do Boot Camp, or some intermediate layer. I have used VMWare in the past and it is more complex to configure. Parallels just loads and works. SO for the use of 2 programs, you have to do Microsoft. And this is the way to get it.
October 24, I have been using this software on my Mac for some backwards compatibility with MS Windows world and software. As always, however, OWC customer service has been terrific. I like the ease of setting up most VM’s, though Windoze Upgrades can be tricky. It allows me to run those occasional use Windoze or Linux software without having to keep a dedicated machine. The only drawback that drops it to a 4 star from a 5 is that it restricts the versions of OS X that you can setup.
Currently, you can’t go any further back that Mavericks. My first Mac Mini was a Snow Leopard machine and sometimes I find that even in a VM, I can get certain tasks accomplished quicker than with all of the bells and whistles of newer versions. I also like physical media so this was win-win. I was really impressed with the Coherence mode and enjoyed the easy printer and file sharing – I literally had to configure NOTHING in my guest operating systems to access my desktop printer.
If you want a professional product which provides fantastic integration between OS X and the guest operating systems you want to run, this is for you! But Great Price! Do we really have to pay every single time the OS changes? Surely they could throw a free upgrade for loyal customers. Of course this is a Paralles issue. What great about OWC, the cost of purchasing is discounted when picking up some great hardware. Thats a really good deal. Thanks OWC. With Parallels the issue was moot. Most of the applications I use are either supplied within OSX or I was able to find cost-effective equivalents. But for the things that I just couldn’t afford to replace, Parallels allow me to run them in a Win VM without a hitch.
When Yosemite was released I held off upgrading because I didn’t want to pay the full upgrade price. On a conventional HD the performance is rather good. But when coupled with an SSD the performance increases dramatically. The only issue that I have had is that sometimes after upgrading from a previous version, you will need to “re-authorize” your copy of Windows. Please try again later. Wanted this permanent license version 13 as opposed to the newer annual subscription license version 14 and higher for my MacBook Pro which is now stuck at OS X El Capitan to run Windows 10 Pro.
Beware the box comes with the license key only, no software. If you follow the instructions to download Parallels you will be directed to download the latest version 15 which will not install on El Capitan and is the yearly subscription version. I was able to find an unadulterated version 13 package online from a different website. Downloaded and installed without any issues. It even went and fetched the latest patch for version 13 from Parallels. Applied license key and Voila! Purchased Windows 10 Pro from Amazon, downloaded the iso file and installed the vm from Parallels.

The August install was seven days before the release of Parallels Far more stable than alternative virtual machine packages, but has similar challenges of dealing with guest operating system challenges, so you need to stay on supported releases of the guest, which means avoid auto-update of your guests.
Shortly after installing I was notified I was eligible for a free upgrade to Parallels 14 for the newer install. The same upgrade for the earlier license was only available from the Parallels site at about the same price as a new license. The upgrade from Parallels 13 to 14 was fast and smooth and without issue. On two different systems, the Windows and Fedora guests updated their tools without a glitch.
This is probably the smoothest release upgrade in the history of virtual machines. Once you do these things you won’t need to look down at your key labels and you can touch type as if it was a Mac keyboard. If you have a programmable keyboard like I do, you can go to the Parallels menu from within the VM and select DEVICES and put a check next to the keyboard and it’s tunneled into the VM so you can talk to it with the keyboard configuration software.
Uncheck it again to use on the Mac OS side. I have started using Parallels Desktop a couple of month ago after several friends recommended for data analytics project.
I truly recommend Parallels Desktop if you are not a PC expert like me. This seems to be a big improvement over previous releases of this product.
It is not as resource hungry as the older versions. It makes going back and forth between Mac and Windows programs on my MacBook Pro feel completely seamless. I have to keep reminding myself that I’m working in a Windows program on my Mac. I don’t detect any lag or freezes. Go figure! Interesting product. I have a Mac and this was relatively easy to install and set up. The operation has been flawless.
Interestingly, and unknown to me when I ordered it, is that it includes some kind of Windows 10 with it. I say some kind because when I used the Windows it frequently popped with a message that it was in illegal or unauthorized copy or something like that.
I was planning on buying Windows anyway and did and no more issues. But I really like this and if you have a Mac and a need for Windows this is an easy decision. I have my first Mac and I heard that I could run windows at the same time using Parallels. There is a program available with the Mac but I understand from others that it is much more cumbersome. Just remember if you are using this on Mac you need to also purchase Windows 10, which is also very easy to install.
I am very pleased. I have an old Mac Pro that has basically been upgraded to function close to a recent release, and have Windows 7 with Office, Project, and Visio installed on my Boot Camp.
